ARCHIVE INTERVIEW

How did you get started in music?
K-Mason: I always felt that I was a part of music, but i started expressing it at the age of nine when I wrote my first battle rap.

Frank Castle: Music became my escape, a form of therapy. It also became a means to get out the hood.

What does your music represent to you?
Frank Castle: It represents everything. It details and documents our lives, as well as what’s going on around us, sort of like the news.
K-Mason: It represents expression of a culture and experience, particularly being that of free thought, truth and passion.

Who is your biggest musical influence and why?
Frank Castle: I would say my moms and the streets were my biggest musical influences. My mom always had music playing, I guess since we were broke, that was her escape and whatever the streets was playing.
K-Mason: It’s too many to name, but the last inspirations before I started to do the music was Biggie, Nas, Rakim, Wu-tang and so on.

What do you want music fans to gain from your music?
K-Mason: I want them to gain the same things that I gained from all the great artists and musicians I listen to. Which is substance in mind, body and soul; Whether it makes me move or bop, if it hits my mind, makes me think or reflect, or if its soul food that resonates inside me and gives me something higher. It’s gotta move me in one way or another.

Frank Castle: I want them to gain an understanding of what we have gone through and continue to go through in this unjust world. Maybe some people listening can relate and hopefully others that don’t can at least understand our plight.

What do you think about the music industry overall at this time?
Frank Castle: In the words of Jay Z… “The Industry is shady, it need to be taken over.” In short a lot of the music is trash, not all, but what I think is lacking the most is diversity. Everybody looks the same, acts the same and sound the same.
K-Mason: I think it’s in a changing period and there will be a lot of new styles piping up. Many will fall off but the core of the culture will evolve like anything else, depending on its environment.
